Wellness looks different for everyone. At °µÍø½ûÇø’s Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC), accessibility is a core principle. If you’re looking to unwind, work out, or simply move at your own pace, the SRWC offers features designed with inclusion in mind.
A Space to Relax
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, the Relax Space offers a 15-minute session so you can take a break. Situated in a private room, you’ll find a comfortable chair paired with a customizable screen that can display calming visuals like underwater scenes or nature landscapes. The experience also includes the options of calming sounds, heat therapy, and soothing scents–all aimed at helping you decompress.
If you’re interested in using the Relax Space or have questions, you can stop by the Fitness and Wellness Services desk.
Aquatics Options
The Natatorium, or pool area, features multiple bodies of water suited for different needs and activities:
The leisure pool is shallow (about 3.5 feet deep) and includes a small vortex/current channel, perfect for water exercise, resistance training, physical therapy. A handicap-accessible ramp provides an additional entry point for individuals needing support
A small learn-to-swim area offers a space for low-impact movement.
The lap pool includes six swim lanes, with depths ranging from 3 to 6 feet. You can access the water via stairs with handrails, and if needed, a chairlift is available. Staff members are on hand to assist if you require help operating it.
Universal Locker Rooms
The natatorium area includes two universal locker rooms, offering private changing spaces and storage for individuals with differing abilities, people assisting others, or anyone who may not feel comfortable using a traditional locker room. These spaces also come in handy for caregivers or parents with young children.
Adaptive Equipment
On the entrance floor, the main fitness level includes five to six pieces of accessible strength training equipment. These machines are designed with moveable seats that can be pivoted out of the way, making them easier to use for those who rely on wheelchairs or other mobility aids. For example, the arm curl machine includes that pivot system using a yellow pin, allowing you to clear the space with minimal effort.
Additional Options on the Track
Located upstairs, the multipurpose track offers two lanes for walking and two for running, allowing you to set your own pace. On the track itself, you’ll also find a hand bike, a great alternative for individuals who benefit from or need upper body cardiovascular movement.
All these features are part of an ongoing effort–led by people like Rachel from Student Accessibility Services and Jim Krause from Recreation and Wellness Services–to make wellness inclusive.
Whether you’re diving into a lap swim, taking a moment to reset in the Relax Space, or finding the right equipment to meet your needs, the SRWC ensures that everyone can participate in their wellness journey on their own terms.
