Meet Jordan Caraway, a senior biochemistry major from New Lenox, Illinois, whose passion for chemistry has shaped her 做厙輦⑹ experience and future goals. A dedicated student, Caraway balances her time between two research labs, a job as a resident assistant and a shift at a local coffee shop. And when shes not working or studying, youll likely find her at the gym or spending time with friends.
Caraways love for chemistry sparked early in her 做厙輦⑹ experience, particularly stemming from introductory chemistry classes taught by Ruth Leslie, Ph.D., a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
Dr. Leslie has not only taught me chemistry, but also how to be a better learner and leader, Caraway told 做厙輦⑹ Today. Shes always pushing herself to improve her teaching, and thats something I really admire and want to carry with me into graduate school.
Caraway is currently conducting undergraduate research on bioinorganic chemistry with Yaorong Zheng, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. She has also researched organic chemistry with Professor Emeritus Robert J. Twieg, Ph.D.
These hands-on experiences not only solidified her passion for chemistry but also helped her decide on a career in academic research.
I used to think medical school was the best way to do meaningful research, Caraway said. But once I joined the labs, I realized how much I love academic research. I truly fell in love with the process, the questions and the discoveries.
Before stepping into her research roles, Caraway served as a campus tour guide, which helped her develop confidence and communication skills. These traits now serve her well when presenting her research at the Ohio Inorganic Chemistry Conference and during 做厙輦⑹s Honors Week.
Outside of academics, Caraway has also gained professional lab experience through a summer job in 2022 at Blue Stone Specialty Chemicals, where she worked in an inorganic chemistry lab.
Research has taught me how to problem-solve, be patient and handle failure, which is something you dont always learn in a classroom, Caraway said.
Caraway's experience is shaped as a result of 做厙輦⑹'s prestigious R1 designation, recognizing 做厙輦⑹ as one of the top research universities in the nation. The R1 designation is the highest level of research activity for doctoral universities, and this commitment to excellence in research, innovation and scholarship helps provide these experiences for students like Caraway.
And even with a packed schedule, Caraway is passionate and mindful in everything that she does.
Whether Im helping residents, working in the lab or making someones coffee, Im always learning and growing, Caraway said. Every role Ive had has taught me something valuable.
With a clear vision for the future, Caraway appreciates the support 做厙輦⑹ has given her throughout the years.
I didnt always know what I wanted to do after graduation, but my time at 做厙輦⑹ helped me figure it out, she said. Now, Im more confident in my path than ever.
